ISSME offers projects & programmes to support the diverse needs of small and medium enterprises, entrepreneurs and their support institutions. From this section of our website, you can access information on programs related to ISSME key focus areas and pilot projects, as well as special interests.
ISSME’s approach enables small business owners and policy makers to develop an understanding of the basic issues pertaining to the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). We hope that our programs, which continue to expand attracting increasing policy and media attention, will contribute to an informed discussion on devising appropriate policy measures for the sector.
The past years have seen significant expansion at ISSME in research activity, providing training & technical education, advocacy & mass movements, information dissemination on topical issues, expansion of membership base, appointment of affiliates in various countries, and in organization of events for knowledge sharing and improving the quality of policy debate on issues of importance to SMEs. Conferences, seminars, workshops, training programs, campaigning, advocacy & networking, research & studies are an integral and important component of ISSME’s programs.
Considering our success in the past year, demand for our programs and activities is growing fast. We thank all our members, affiliates, partners, donors, volunteers and assure them of ISSME’s strongest commitment to quality, timeliness and effective implementation of programs.
Despite significant economic growth and technological advance, the benefits of development have largely by-passed the much needed segments of the small business sector. ISSME believes in the importance of encouraging solutions through the initiative of those living and working closest to where problems are located. The ISSME also strongly believes in the value of ensuring the participation of women and men from diverse communities, from different fields of SME sector and at all levels of society.
Issues that affect the sustainable growth and development of SMEs are at the core of ISSME programs.
- Grassroots level – On a pilot basis to gain useful insights for a better understanding of the issues so that effective policies can be formulated.
- Intermediary level – To promote and strengthen members, affiliates, partners and other local, national, regional and international organizations; networking these initiatives and linking them for advocacy to similar initiatives, both within and outside the region and organising events like conferences, seminars, workshops, expos, symposiums and webinars at the national, regional and international level.
- Policy Research & Advocacy – By documentation of information, policy research and analysis; through policy advocacy; information dissemination through publications like newsmagazines, bulletins, journals etc. and Mass Mobilization through ISSME Campaigns.
- Capacity Development – Through capacity building of SMEs & their support institutions.
Sound action in individual member countries is the core of the ISSME initiative. Country-level pilot projects harness the combined resources of members, affiliates and partners.
Finding the right pilot project is the most challenging task. The deciding factors include the size and duration of the project.
Here’s how these projects work.
A core team is formed after a member country chooses a project theme in line with the national priorities and the imperatives from the point of view of sustainable development of small businesses.
The team, which includes experts from the SME sector and partner organisations, carries out a detailed assessment. It is assisted by an advisory committee with members drawn from stakeholder agencies and groups.
Next are the recommendations and a discussion the road ahead when it comes to their implementation. This includes briefings to key stakeholders and decision makers in the region. A workshop to build capacity for inter-sectoral collaboration wraps up the process.

They provide an excellent platform for sharing expertise, experience and emerging best practices. They provide a great opportunity for establishing new contacts and business linkages.
The main Objectives for holding ISSME conferences are as follows:
- Promoting understanding of the importance of SME development worldwide; exchanging experiences and best practices in SME creation, development and support.
- Establishing and reinforcing cooperation with international institutions, NGOs and private sector organisations dedicated to SME development.
- Presenting awards to institutions and individuals in recognition of their outstanding contributions to SME development.
- Enhancing the image of the Host Organisation and related supporters; increasing awareness and recognition of the achievements of the Host Country.
The Chief Executive Officers of many member-institutions travel to the conference from all around the world.
